Nearly a hundred people came out Thursday night (Feb. 10) to attend the kick-off meeting of the Friends of the White Rock Creek Trail at Mariano’s Hacienda in Lake Highlands. Meeting organizers Lee Kleinman and Marc Mumby were extremely pleased with the turnout, commenting that “this level of support shows how valuable an asset the trail is to our community.” There was a strong consensus that efforts should proceed to formally establish a “Friends” group for the White Rock Creek Trail.
Attendees included elected officials, Dallas Park Board representatives, staff from the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, running and cycling clubs, homeowners groups, and trail users. Dallas City Council Members Sheffie Kadane (District 9), Jerry Allen (District 10), and Linda Koop (District 11) as well as State Representative Kenneth Sheets (District 107) all came to show their support for the new Friends group. Portions of the White Rock Creek Trail run through each of their districts.
Lee Kleinman, Park Board Representative for district 11, introduced Michael Hellman, Manager of Park Planning and Acquisitions for the Park and Recreation Department, who presented a brief history and current status of the trail. Mr. Hellman then introduced Ms. Sugie Dotson and Richard Stauffer, Park and Recreation Project Managers, who discussed trail extension and widening projects scheduled to start this summer. Kleinman then outlined the goals of the Friends group, fielded questions and comments from the audience, and closed by urging attendees to become members and to volunteer.
We’ll post a more detailed description of the outcome of the meeting and our plans for the immediate future in the next few days. Stay tuned!
